How to Download Your Envato Elements Licences (Step-by-Step)
Envato Elements is one of the most popular unlimited-download subscription platforms for creatives. For a flat monthly fee, you get access to millions of templates, graphics, fonts, stock photos, video templates, and more. It's an incredible deal — until you try to figure out the licensing.
Unlike most stock platforms, Envato Elements uses a project-based licensing model. This means you don't just download an asset and automatically receive a licence. You need to register each asset to a specific project before the licence is generated. If you've been downloading assets without registering them to projects, you may not have valid licences for any of them. This guide explains exactly how Envato's system works and how to get your licence documents in order.
How Envato Elements Licensing Works
Here's what makes Envato Elements different from platforms like Shutterstock or Adobe Stock:
- Every asset must be registered to a project. When you download an item, Envato asks you to assign it to a project (you can create projects with any name). The licence is generated for that specific asset-project combination.
- One licence per project per asset. If you use the same asset in three different projects, you technically need three separate licences — one for each project.
- Licences are tied to your subscription. You can only generate licences while your subscription is active. However, licences that were generated while subscribed remain valid even after cancellation.
- Unregistered downloads have no licence. If you downloaded an asset without adding it to a project, there is no licence document for that download. You'd need to re-register it to a project while still subscribed.
This model catches a lot of people off guard. Many users download hundreds of assets over months or years, never bothering with the project registration step, and only realize later that they have no licence documentation for any of it.
How to Download Envato Elements Licence Certificates
Step 1: Log in to your Envato Elements account
Go to elements.envato.com and sign in. Ensure your subscription is currently active — you cannot generate or download licence documents on a cancelled or expired plan.
Step 2: Go to your Downloads page
Click your profile icon in the top-right corner and select "Downloads". This shows a list of every item you've downloaded. Each entry shows the asset name, type, and whether it has been registered to a project.
Step 3: Register items to projects (if not already done)
For any item that shows "Not licensed" or has no project assigned, you'll need to click "Add to project" or "License this item". Select an existing project or create a new one. This step generates the licence. Without it, there is no licence to download — the asset is effectively unlicensed.
Step 4: Download the licence certificate
Once an item is registered to a project, a "Download licence certificate" link appears. Click it to download a text file or PDF that contains the licence terms, asset details, project name, and the date of licensing. This is your legal proof of use.
Step 5: Repeat for every downloaded asset
Work through your entire download history. For each item: verify it's registered to the correct project, then download the licence certificate. If you use an asset across multiple client projects, you'll need to register and download a separate licence for each project.
The Cancellation Trap
This is the single most important thing to understand about Envato Elements licensing:
Licences generated while your subscription was active remain valid forever. You can continue to use those assets in the projects they were registered to, even after you cancel. The end product you created can remain published indefinitely.
However, you cannot generate new licences after cancellation. This means:
- Any downloaded asset that was never registered to a project becomes unlicensed — you have no right to use it.
- You cannot retroactively register old downloads to projects after your subscription ends.
- You cannot download licence certificate files for previously licensed items after cancellation (the documents themselves become inaccessible through the interface).
This is why backing up your licence certificates before you cancel is absolutely critical. Once the subscription is gone, the window closes permanently.
⚠️ Warning: Unregistered downloads are legally unlicensed. If you've been downloading Envato Elements assets without assigning them to projects, you do not have valid licences for those assets. Using them in client work or published projects without a licence exposes you to copyright claims. Before you cancel your subscription, go through every download and ensure it's registered to the appropriate project. Once cancelled, you cannot fix this retroactively.
How Long Does This Take?
Envato's process is more involved than most platforms because of the project registration step. For each asset, you may need to: check if it's registered, register it if not, then download the licence. That's roughly 20–30 seconds per asset.
- 50 assets: ~15–25 minutes
- 200 assets: ~1–1.5 hours
- 1,000 assets: ~5.5–8 hours
- 3,000+ assets: Multiple full workdays
And these estimates assume you already know which project each asset belongs to. If you need to figure that out — matching downloads to client projects across months or years of work — the real time investment is even larger.
Organizing Your Envato Licences
Because Envato uses project-based licensing, your organization system should mirror that structure:
- Create a folder for each project, named identically to the project in Envato Elements.
- Store the licence certificates inside the corresponding project folder.
- Keep a master spreadsheet mapping asset IDs to project names, client names, and use dates.
- Back up everything to cloud storage — don't rely solely on Envato's interface to hold your records.
Don't lose your Envato licences
